Just behind the heavy wooden door, clusters of people were busily working. There were several long wooden tables, manned by people peeling carrots, chopping onions, and rolling out bread dough. The sound of searing meat sizzled on rustic stoves, and huge pots of broth were stirred and tasted for seasoning. The table directly to the left of Kate and Luca was covered in flour and eggs. The head chef, Georg, was kneading pastry dough, dividing it into small portions the size of a fist and stuffing them with fresh berries. He was oversized and round, and covered with flour. The assistant to his right, a young man, was mixing more dough, and added a sprinkle of salt.

Georg smacked him on the back of the head, sending flour everywhere. The assistant’s face nearly fell into the dough.

“Whaddya doin, addin’ salt to the dough? This is pastry dough, ya blockhead! You’re gonna give the king a heart attack, with all this salt!”

Kate laughed at the scene. She motioned to Luca to be quiet as she snuck up behind Georg. A tray of freshly baked pastries was at his right, and one by one he sprinkled them with sugar and placed them on a silver platter to his left. As he placed a pastry ball, Kate popped one in her mouth. He looked at the tray as he went to place the next one and did a double-take. Kate ducked deftly and silently behind him. Georg counted them out with his fingers, shrugged, and then continued. Kate took another one. He turned back again, and threw his hands up in the air.

“That does it! If food’s disappearin’ from my kitchen, it can only mean one thing. Hiya Katie!” He turned around with his arms open wide.

“Hiya Georg!” She laughed and gave him a big hug. He got flour all over her.

“Oh, hello, my beautiful queen! Where you been?”

“On another adventure. Georg, this is Luca.”

“Nice to meet ya Luca, have a pastry.” He held a doughy ball in his hand.

“I’ll wait until after dinner, thank you,” Luca replied.

“Suit yourself!” Kate took the pastry.

“Always had a good appetite, this one!” Georg laughed.

“That’s because I work hard for it,” Kate said in between bites.

“You’re the only one I let into my kitchen. You and the kiddo, that is.”

“Aunt Kate!!” Just then, a little boy ran up to Kate and jumped into her arms.

“Hello, my little prince! How have you been?” she asked, ruffling his short, dusky brown hair.

“Have a pastry!” offered Georg.

“I’m good Aunt Kate. Did you bring me something?”

Kaspar started picking at Kate’s clothes with his tiny fingers, looking for hidden pockets. She smiled at him narrowly, putting him down and placing her hands on her hips.

“Do I have something for you? Is that the only reason you’re happy to see me?” she asked. Kaspar got a guilty look on his face, almost immediately replaced by a mischievous one.

“No. But you did bring me something, right?” The smile on Kate’s face told him she was holding out on him.
